Unfortunately, I have decided to close the blog for good. I simply don't have the time to put in the effort that such a blog deserves. For those who have visited on a regular basis, thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed it. I will keep the archives online as it would be a waste to delete all the posts. But don't expect any updates from now on.

I strongly recommend the fantastic auspOp blog for all the latest information regarding the Australian music industry.

New music videos from Pink and Vanessa

Pink's "So What" is an absolutely hilarious video, a true feast for the eyes. And it features her ex-hubby, for whom the song is about (sarcastic of cause)! Damn this girl rocks! Especially love the part when she's flashing in front of the paps haha. Watch it here (they won't let me embed the video argh!).

And Vanessa Amorosi has revealed the video for her new single "The Simple Things (Something Emotional)". A nice simple video which reflects the song perfectly, and she looks amazing.

In praise of Alanis

"In Praise Of The Vulnerable Man" has been released as a digital single in the UK and Ireland this week. The iTunes format features a brand new b-side titled "Break".

According to an Italian fan site, the second single in the US will be "Not As We" (as stated during her appearance on Jay Leno) while Europe will get "In Praise Of The Vulnerable Man". Why they haven't already released the brilliant "Versions Of Violence" is beyond me. It should have been the album's first single.

The marketing of "Flavors Of Entanglement" has been quite dismal. The terrible choice of first single "Underneath" (my least favourite off the album) killed the album before it was even released. "Flavours" has managed to sell just below half a million copies worldwide since its release three months ago. In the US, it currently sits at #146 with total sales of 177,252. Unfortunately, the album looks to become Alanis' lowest selling international studio album yet - a continuing trend with each release since her peak in the mid-90s with the classic, 30 million selling "Jagged Little Pill".

P!nk's funhouse

Pink has revealed the title of her fifth album, and it's called "Funhouse"! The album hits stores in Australia on October 25, and the US on October 28.

The music video for the first single "So What" premiers this Friday, August 22nd. Reception to the single has been overwhelming positive. In the US, it is the #1 most added song at two radio formats (Pop and Adult Contemporary), and it's also the #1 greatest gainer at radio. In Australia, it's sitting comfortable at #1 on iTunes. Will "So What" become Pink's third Australian solo #1 since 2000's "Most Girls" and 2002's "Get The Party Started"?

Female stars gather for charity single

The likes of Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood are gathering together for the "Stand Up To Cancer" campaign, each contributing vocals to the single "Just Stand Up".

Produced by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds and Antonio "L.A." Reid, the track will be available to download on iTunes from September 2nd. The singers will share the stage to perform the single on the "Stand Up To Cancer" television special, airing on September 5th simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS.

Flashback: Unique II "Break My Stride"

Does this take you back or what? In 1996, dance duo Unique II released a cover of the 1983 Matthew Wilder classic "Break My Stride". The single was hugely popular in Australia, peaking at #2 and accredited Platinum status, and was a #1 hit in New Zealand and Austria. Although they remain one hit wonders here in Australia with no other releases ever charting in the Top 50, the duo achieved several Top 10 singles and albums in their Austrian homeland.

Delta on Rove and Melbourne instore

Performing her latest single "I Can't Break It To My Heart", an absolutely beautiful performance.

An absolutely hilarious interview in which Delta talks of her experiences in the US (including bribing people with food to watch her perform!), plus the classic "Win $20 in 20 seconds".

Now to the Melbourne instore which occurred on Saturday! There was an enormous turn-out for Delta, this being her first Melbourne instore in around 3 years. Delta came out and performed acoustic versions of "I Can't Break It To My Heart" and "In This Life", and then began signing CDs for the thousands of fans who spent hours lining up. If there's one thing you could never fault Delta, it's the way she treats her fans. She is extremely friendly, has conversations and takes photos with everyone. She has the ability to make all her fans feel loved and appreciated. I spoke to Delta about the tour - she's completed the set list and it will include my favourite track "Angels In The Room" as I requested! Below is a couple of photos I took and a my signed copy of the new single.

News on upcoming U2 releases

The boys from Ireland are in the midst of completing their 12th studio album, the follow-up to 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" which sold 10 million copies worldwide and picked up eight Grammy Awards. According to fansite @U2, the new album title is believed to be "No Line On The Horizon", with the release date on November 14, 2008. Song titles include "Moment of Surrender," "For Your Love," "Love Is All We Have Left" and "One Bird", "If I Could Live My Life Again," "The Cedars of Lebanon" and the title track.

A few of U2's early albums - Boy (1980), October (1981), War (1983), The Joshua Tree (1987) - have been remastered and re-issued over the past few months. Next up is the remastering of U2's first live album "Under a Blood Red Sky" (1983), while their first concert video "Live At Red Rocks" will be released on DVD for the very first time. The DVD will feature five previously unreleased songs, a director’s commentary, digitally re-graded pictures and a 5.1 mix. A deluxe edition will include both CD and DVD in the one package.

Here is the video for The Veronicas' new single "Take Me On The Floor", the fourth single from their currently 2x platinum album "Hook Me Up". The song is bloody ace, and the clip is sure to raise a few eyebrows with its lezbian action.

The girls have been through a rough couple of weeks. Jess called off her engagement to former Australian Idol contestant-turned "Neighbours" star Dean Geyer, and nude photos of Lisa were posted on the internet by an ex-boyfriend.

Musically, they've been kicking goals with all three singles from this album having reached Top 10. I doubt "Take Me On The Floor" will be an exception. They've completely won me over with this album. If you haven't heard it, get it!

Britney's back and looking AMAZING!

Here are the ads starring Britney Spears, promoting the 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards, and WOW, isn't she looking amazing?! You could be forgiven for thinking these clips were shot three years ago before Britney's private life turned into absolute hell. But it seems safe to say that the worst is finally behind her, and that her proper "comeback" will be a great joy to watch. Brit is currently working on her fifth studio album, the follow-up to last year's "Blackout" (which performed well considering it received virtually zero promotion from Britney who was still battling her inner demons).

It was at last year's VMAs that she stole the show (for all the wrong reasons), with her ironically now iconic, disastrous performance of "Gimme More". It makes me so genuinely happy to see Britney look the best she has in years, happy and relaxed. In years to come, hopefully people will look back on that troubled period of her life, and honor Britney as a TRUE survivor.

This week 10 years ago: Australia's #1 single

There are some songs that remain absolutely timeless, and "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls is no exception. Taken from the phenomenally successful "City of Angels" soundtrack (which spent two weeks at #1 in Australia), the song became their biggest and most memorable hit worldwide.

It spent five consecutive weeks at #1 and a total of 33 weeks in the ARIA Top 50, and was accredited 2x platinum for sales of more than 140,000 copies. Unfortunately, the Goo Goo Dolls have remained "one hit wonders" in Australia, with further singles failing to make an impact on the charts. But you'll still here "Iris" on the radio every now and again.

Rogue Traders update

Since the departure of lead singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte a couple of months ago, a dark cloud has been hanging over the future of the Rogue Traders. Recently, Rogue Traders co-founder/member James Ash cleared up a few questions on their official forum and gave some insight into the new phase of the band. You can read the whole thing here.

But to summarise his main points:
- There will be no fourth single from their latest album "Better In The Dark". This was not a decision of the band, but the record company. Had there been a new single, "On Your Way To The Disco" would have been chosen.
- A live DVD will not be happening anytime soon. Although the band has footage of their live shows, it is not of DVD quality. They originally had plans to film one of their shows from their latest tour for a DVD release, but SonyBMG were stingy and didn't give them money to do it.
- They will begin writing material for the fourth album over the next couple of months, but will release it when it's ready to be released. Expect the new album sometime next year.
- They will be looking for a new lead singer, but have not begun searching just yet.
- Although he is unsure of what the new material will sound like, he suspects it will be more dancier and less rock.

So there you have it. It'll be particularly interesting to see who is selected as the new lead singer, and how they'll transform the Rogue Traders sound which Natalie trully created with her distinct, attitude-filled vocals.

Lennox gets reflective

The "Best of" collections just keep on rolling in! The legendary Annie Lennox is set to release a compilation spanning her entire solo career, featuring singles from the albums "Diva" (1992), "Medusa" (1995), "Bare" (2003) and last year's "Songs Of Mass Destruction" (2007).

Unfortunately all her music videos on YouTube have been disabled. But here's Annie's two biggest solo hits.

"Why", possibly one of the saddest songs ever recorded.

"No More I Love You's", which earned her a Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

And a more recent track, "Dark Road", the first single from her fourth studio album "Songs of Mass Destruction".

Ness goes simple on new single

After the massive success of her #1 radio, Top 5 ARIA, gold smash hit "Perfect", Vanessa Amorosi is preparing for the third single from her latest album "Somewhere In The Real World" called "The Simple Things (Something Emotional)".

I admit, this choice of single has puzzled me. Of all the tracks on the album, this laid-back ballad never screamed "single material" to me so I'm not sure how it'll be received. I personally would have gone with the rockin', hair-raising "19 Turning Point". I guess we can only wait and see how it goes. A remix, titled the Paolos San Terenzo Mix, has been promo'd out to radio stations, and I'm assuming will be the official "radio mix". It revamps the track into a electro-trancy number - me likes alot! You can listen to it here.

Kylie confirms: "The One" will get a video

Kylie fans, let us rejoice! "The One" is getting a music video. The hysteria surrounding the release of "The One" has been a frustrating and tiring one. The track, which quite simply should have been THE comeback single for Kylie, has been treated dismally by Parlophone, releasing it as a lame digital single.

As a consequence, with no music video to support it, "The One" debuted at #36 on the UK charts last week, becoming Kylie's lowest-charting single since...well forever. Ridiculous when you consider Kylie was touring the UK at the time, and being the fan-favourite off the album, a physical single would have most likely secured her a Top 10 position. Since then, rumours have been flying around that Parlophone are indeed releasing it physically (god only knows if and when!), but the question of a music video ever happening has been finally answered by Kylie herself! AMEN.

Is Hilary "so yesterday"?

Times are tough for the Duffster. Her latest album "Dignity" (2007), which showcased a more mature Hilary moving into the electro-pop genre, scared off the kiddie fanbase who once bought her albums in the millions. As a result, Hollywood Records is pulling the plug on the former Lizzie McGuire star.

With current Disney golden girl Miley Cyrus taking the pre-teen world by storm with her Hannah Montana television series and subsequent music career, it appears Hilary has become what her signature tune suggests - so yesterday! What's worse is the fact Hollywood Records, without Hilary's support, have decided to release a "Best Of" compilation to cash-in on her greater-selling back catalogue, and to make up for the financial loss of "Dignity" (which struggled to shift 400,000 units in the US, and less than a million units worldwide).

Word is Hollywood Records wanted a brand new studio album out by the end of the year, but as Hilary refused to be rushed, this new compilation is the solution to complete her 6 album deal. What's so ridiculous about this release is not only Hilary's lack of notable hits (and I use that term "hits" very lightly), but the fact this will now be her second(!) worldwide singles collection. In 2005, Hilary released "Most Wanted", a compilation of all her singles up that point. This is from a girl who's only released three studio albums in her entire career people!

BUT on the bright side, sources say Hilary has wanted out of her Hollywood Records contract for over a year now in order to make music in which she has greater "artistic" control. She's said to be in talks with several labels. Good luck to her.

"The Best Of Hilary Duff" is due for release on September 23, 2008 (pre-order on Amazon.) The pitiful track list consists of a lazy twelve tracks: eight "hits", two new tracks and two remixes of the two new tracks.

The world's favourite dyke Pink is back with her rockin' new single "So What", the first to be released from her fourthcoming fifth studio album. It's everything we have come to love from Pink, filled with guts, attitude and humorous sarcasm. I especially love the start of the second verse which goes "The waiter just took my table and gave it to Jessica Simpson, SHIT!" LOL!

The track is very similar to past hits "U and Ur Hand" and "Cuz I Can" - not surprisingly, the producer behind those two Pink classics is also behind "So What". The man in question, Max Martin, continually proves that when it comes to pop, he knows what the people want. There's no official word of when the single will be released, but the album - which has yet to be titled - will be out October 25 2008.

Meanwhile, a couple of weeks ago, the never-dieing "I'm Not Dead" passed it's 100th week in the ARIA Top 50!

Wiggle It!

Yeah baby, Ricki's back! The boobilicious former Young Diva (who are they again?!?) is back with a brand spankin' new single called "Wiggle It", a sexy R&B-pop anthem that's sure to continue her string of Top 10 hits. Listen to it on YouTube here.

This release has appeared completely out of the blue as I don't believe Ricki has even begun working on her third album. I'm assuming its purpose is to capitalise on her new role as co-host of the upcoming sixth season of Australian Idol, which begins airing on August 24th. "Wiggle It" was originally intended for her second album "Brand New Day". As Ricki states, "I was disappointed when "Wiggle It" didn’t work on my last album, so I’m beyond THRILLED to be finally getting this single out to my fans!".

The single is due for physical release on September 13th, 2008 with a digital release on September 16th, 2008.

Idol runner-up to release "Best Of"

Shannon Noll, the first Australian Idol runner-up, is also the first Australian Idol contestant to release a Greatest Hits collection. Since coming to fame in 2003, Shannon has released three successful albums - the multi-platinum #1s "That's What I'm Taking About" (2004), "Lift" (2005) and his latest platinum record "Turn It Up" (2007). Now the most successful of the whole Idol bunch is doing a "Natalie Imbruglia" by releasing a singles collection with an additional five new tracks. Premature? Yes. But rumours suggest there's tension between Shannon and Sony BMG and that this compilation could be a way out of his contract. These are however only RUMOURS and could be totally false.

Unlike Natalie Imbruglia, each of the ten singles that make up "No Turning Back: The Story So Far" have ALL been big hits on the Australian charts and radio alike. Shannon has achieved ten consective Top 10 singles, 3 of which have reached #1. All of these apart from "C'mon Aussie C'mon", a charity single released in 2004, are present. A wise move as "C'mon" remains the most embarassing song of his career.

Delta: New single and tour news

After finally releasing her debut US album last month - which gained itself a place in the Billboard 200 at #116 - Delta is back in Australia for the fourth single from her 3x platinum album "Delta" and its called "I Can't Break It To My Heart". The singles off this album have showcased a diverse range of styles, from the rock-pop of "In This Life" to the dance, string-fuelled ballad "Believe Again" to the quirky raggae-pop of "You Will Only Break My Heart". "I Can't Break It" is an epic ballad about being in denial over the breakup of a relationship. The music video is a collection of behind the scenes footage intertwined with Delta performing the track earler this year at one of her Sydney shows. Watch it here.

Unfortunately, the CD single features no new b-sides. In fact, it doesn't offer much new at all. But hey, better than no single at all! And as the two previous Diamond Cut mixes were much fun, this "In This Life" mix is also a real gem. Australian fans can pre-order limited edition artwork. The single is in stores August 16th.

But for the MOST EXCITING NEWS IN AGES! Delta is embarking on her second national tour of Australia in January 2009. Considering The Visualise Tour took place in mid-2005, this is LONG overdue, but will be worth the wait I'm sure. The 9 date "Believe Again" tour stops off in Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle with 2 shows each in Melbourne and Sydney. Tickets go on sale August 21 through Ticketmaster.

FINALLY, here it is. To be honest, this will never rank as one of my favourite Alanis songs and I don't think it will set the charts alight. The video is directed by Sanji who also did Jesse Mc's "Leavin'" video.

The album "Flavours of Entanglement" is out June 7. A limited edition comes with a bonus disc of 5 bonus tracks and an expanded booklet - yummy!

Delta in the US: New video and album cover

Here's the brand new US video for "In This Life", the first single from Delta's debut self-titled US album, out June 24. It's strangely familiar to Delta's US "Lost Without You" video, which was also set on the beach, but ad least it's miles better than the dreadful Australian video. I'm assuming they will also use this video to re-launch Delta's UK and European career.

Also released is the artwork for the cover of the US album. The picture is gorgeous, but can't say I'm too keen on the font.

On Britney's radar

Apparently "Radar" will be the fourth single from Britney's latest album Blackout, which has sold around 2.5 million copies since its October 2007 release. An official cover (above) leaked onto the internet and there are reports that Brit will direct the video herself (hopefully with greater success than her last attempt with "Do Somethin'"!). The track sounds very similar to Rihanna's "SOS".

Current single "Break The Ice" is beginning to make an impact on the charts worldwide, following monster singles "Give Me More" and "Piece Of Me".

His new single may be called "Leavin'", but Jesse McCartney ain't going anywhere. After an impressive Hot 100 debut last week at #14, it climbs Top 10 this week at #10. This is now Jesse's biggest US hit. His previous peaks on the Billboard Hot 100 are as follows:
- "Beautiful Soul" (2004) #15
- "She's No You" (2005) #91
- "Right Where You Want Me" (2006) #33

The new album Departure is released May 20 in the US, May 31 in Australia, June 4 in Japan and June 9 in the UK. Australian and Japanese editions will include his version of Leona's "Bleeding Love" as a bonus track.

Madonna's first week sales

Madonna's Hard Candy debuted at #1 in the US with un-remarkable sales of 280,000. Mariah, whose recent album E=MC2 debuted with sales of over 463,000, must be celebrating with champagne. This is also a significant drop compared to first week sales of Madge's last studio effort Confessions On A Dancefloor which opened with 350,606 copies sold. Considering "4 Minutes" has been a bigger hit compared to "Hung Up" in the United States, this result is quite surprising.

Hard Candy sold 14,585 copies to debut at #1 on the Australian ARIA charts (having shipped 35,000 copies). Not a bad result, but not AMAZING either, especially for a superstar like Madonna. In comparison, Kylie's X sold over 16,000 copies in its opening week and Delta's self-titled third album last year sold 22,000 copies in its opening week.

The album has so far debuted at #1 in 18 countries. Will it have a lasting impact?

All you Aussies reading this, I demand you go out and get a copy (or two) of Dannii's sublime 2-disc club compilation "Club Disco". It's jam-packed full of (club) HITS, unreleased material, lounge mixes and a bonus disc of club remixes - she really is the QUEEN OF CLUBS! Ok, so the idiots at Central Station have made it non-chart eligible because they know its going to flop and are afraid of tampering with Dannii's incredible chart history (five Top 100 albums - $UCCE$$!). Poor Dannii, it should be the public who doesn't allow you to chart, not your own record company :(

The promo video above, created by Mike (webmaster of Dannii's Dirty Box), is possibly the only sort of marketing "Club Disco" will receive. If you ask me, it does the job purrrr-fectly.

Commentary:
Madge and JT retain #1 position for the second week and go gold. Leona's promo trip pays off - both "Bleeding Love" and "Better In Time" shoot into the Top 10. Vanessa's "Perfect" shoots up the chart to #11 with the addition of physical sales. It is now her highest peak on the ARIA singles chart since her double-aside "The Power"/"Everytime I Close My Eyes" reached #8 in 2000. Worrying news for Kylie's camp with "In My Arms" entering the charts at #35! If the single fails to climb into the Top 20 during the weeks ahead, it will be her first proper single to have missed the Top 20 since 1998's "Cowboy Style".

I gave it my best shot. I won't try again.

Of course, her "best shot" meant one week of television promotion. With Kylie no longer flying the US Minogue flag, has Dannii finally been given the opportunity to shine? Me thinks someone needs to get a petition started - "CLUB DISCO FOR US RELEASE!"

Track-by-track review: Hard Candy

After the brilliance of 2005's "Confessions On A Dancefloor", Madonna is back with her 11th studio effort "Hard Candy", and it's a flawed record. The moment I heard Madonna was gathering the hottest hit-makers of the moment to create a record that would give her urban cred, I was worried. Madonna has often been a mainstream trend-setter, plucking obscure producers (William Orbit, Mirwais, Stuart Price) to come out with a unique sound everytime, which would set her apart from the competition. Now it appears she's doing the opposite, desperate to mimic the likes of younger, more "hip" female popstars such as Nelly Furtado and Gwen Stefani. You can't help but feel this album represents Madonna's mid-life crisis as this attempt to be accepted by the younger generations reeks of desperation. Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Pharrel Williams are all on board, but instead of working together to create something fresh, innovative and daring, they have simply re-used their previous works and added Madonna's vocals. Madonna's albums have always felt personal to her but on "Hard Candy", she sounds detached as ever. Here's a track-by-track review:

Candy Store
Ja Rule did this in 2005. Like most of the material on this album, Madonna is 4 minutes too late (no pun intended...really). Dreadful lyrics (no Madonna, as much I love you, I don't want a piece of your turkish delight) on top of typical Pharrel production (not bad, but not a patch of his classic works with Britney and Gwen). It comes off sounding like a demo. I just hope this song is a piss-take, and that she's not actually taking herself seriously. There is something extremely disturbing about a 50 year old woman whispering "my candy is raw" multiple times. *Puts on "Erotica" to remember the days when Madonna could pull off hot and sexy so effortlessly*

4 Minutes
The first single in which Madonna provides guest vocals on a trademark Timbaland track. Justin proves why he's at the top of his game. Even though the lyrics are shit, his effortless, smooth vocal performance is pure class and saves "4 Minutes". With the two Tims are on board, this is the US hit Madonna has been having wet dreams over for years. Too bad it still can't get her to #1.

Give It 2 Me
My first thought: production sounds half-baked. Some great synths happening in the chorus. It's all safe fun, nothing remarkable. Apparently this is second single.

Heartbeat
Probably my favourite on the album. I love the weird vocal arrangements, and her high-pitched vocals in the bridge. Memorable chorus, lets pray this is a single. My only complaint is the breakdown in the middle in which Madonna pulls off her best Nelly Furtado impersonation *rolls eyes*.

Miles Away
Certainly not miles away from sounding like a more up-tempo cardboard copy of Nelly Furtado's "All Good Things Come To An End". It's nice enough, probably her best vocal performance on the record.

She's Not Me
The silky production of this electro-dance track is terrific. The verses are completely cringeful (she was stealin, stealin, stealin, and now you're feelin, feelin, feelin). The bridges and chorus are great though (although instead of "love you", a "fuck you in the shower", would have been a bit more interesting).

Hmmm...the production sounds dated. I've definitely heard this track before, but can't put my finger on it. I like the verses, but the chorus is cheese galore.

The Beat Goes On
A 70s-style slow-groove from Pharrel. Nothing like the demo that leaked months ago, although it retains the hypnotic "on and on and on the beat goes on". One of the album's better tracks. Features a non-eventful Kanye West appearance.

Dance 2Night
Second Justin duet, although Justin lets Madonna take up more vocal time. Features the terrible lyric "you don't have to be rich and famous to be good"...um ok. The chorus is reminiscent of classic Michael Jackson. This track is actually very street-wise and "cool" in a retro kind of way. One of the better tracks in which Madge sounds in her element.

Spanish Lesson
DREADFUL. Worst song on the album in which Madonna attempts to teach us Spanish. Oh the pain, it doesn't get any cringier than this. How did this make the final cut!?

Devil Wouldn't Recognise You
A shameless re-hash of Justin's "What Goes Around (Comes Around)". An example of where Madonna sounds like a guest vocalist on someone else's track. It's not bad, I like it, but its not Madonna.

Olivia and Delta, both beautiful Australian songstresses who have survived their battles with cancer, have teamed up for an inspirational ballad called "Right Here With You". It is unknown if it will be released as an actual single, but the track will feature on Olivia's new duets album "A Celebration With Song", which is out in Australia on May 3.

Commentary:
As predicted, Madonna and Justin take top spot this week now that their digital and physical sales are finally combined. This is Madge's 12th #1 in Australia. Brian's "Like Only A Woman Can" goes up 5 places to #13, its highest peak so far, with great news for the album debut (see below). Delta on the other hand drops 4 spots with "You Will Only Break My Heart". Leona's "Better In Time" bullets to #21, expect it to be in (or close to) the Top 10 next week after her short promo visit which includes a performance on the finale of "So You Think You Can Dance". And lastly, the Rogue Traders debut at a dissapointing #30 with "What You're On". Lets hope it rises in the weeks ahead. Vanessa Amorosi releases the "Perfect" CD single this week so it will be interesting to see how physical sales contribute to her chart placing. Also released this week on CD are Kylie's "In My Arms" and Jesse's "Leavin'".

Commentary:
Country star Kasey Chambers keeps Mimi off top spot, scoring her fourth #1 album with "Rattlin' Bones" (a collaboration album with her hubby Shane Nicholson). So Mimi will have to settle for second best, although "E=MC2" has already beaten the peak of "The Emancipation Of Mimi" which reached #6 back in 2005. Brian McFadden debuts at a very impressive #5 - an amazing result considering his debut solo record "Irish Son" failed to crack the Top 50 here (despite containing a #1 with "Almost Here"). Brian has been promoting the hell out of this album during the past few weeks so it's good to see it all pay off. Hopefully it'll stick around for a while. Next week will see "Hard Candy" debut - will Madonna score her 9th Australian #1 album? Hmmmm....duh!

Mimi debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 with her album "E=MC2", selling 463,000 copies. This is Mimi's biggest debut sales week ever. It's also the highest sales week of the year, surpassing the 375,000 start of Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" in February. Mimi celebrates her 6th chart-topping US album, now tied with Madonna and Janet Jackson for the title of female artist with the second most #1s (although Madge will be a step ahead when "Hard Candy" takes top spot in a couple of weeks). The top honour goes to Barbara Streisand who has scored 8. Wow, how gay are the US?

Mariah kicks Mariah-wannabe Leona Lewis' "Spirit" off top spot (we still love you Leona!) which sold 205,000 copies to debut at #1 last week. This week "Spirit" sells 95,000 copies, sitting comfortably under her idol at #2.

Janet Jackson must be digging her grave after hearing of Mimi's $UCCE$$. While "Discipline" also debuted at #1 in the US, late February, it did so with a pitiful 181,000 copies. Mariah has sold more in her first week then what Janet has sold in 2 months. "Discipline" continues Janet's string of flop albums, reaching disastrous positions worldwide, most notably the UK where it peaked at #68!

Mariah debuted in the UK at #3 selling 34,800 copies. Ironically, she was outsold by Leona who sold 36,000 copies at #2 - OUCH! "Bianca is soooo upset!". Indie band The Kooks took top spot with 66,000 copies of their album "Konk".

Dannii's press releases are always a good laugh, and this one for the Australian release of "Club Disco" is no exception:

The nations Queen of Dance returns with a new artist album for 2008, featuring the UK Dance Chart #1 'Touch Me Like That' , plus the hit singles 'Perfection', 'So Under Pressure' and the LMC edit of 'He's The Greatest Dancer'. Dannii's reign as Queen of the Clubs is undeniable, with 13 UK Club Chart #1's and four top selling albums to her name since 1997.

And speaking of Danush, she performed "Xanadu" on the finale of "It Takes Two" last night. It's possibly the GAYEST performance you'll ever see. A queen's wet dream come to life.

IMO not a patch on last year's fabulous performance on "Dancing With The Stars". Grant proves he has alot to learn if he wants to become one of great hosts like Daryl Sommers. I mean c'mon, where is the mention of Dannii's countless, never-ending #1 (club) hits? No one wants to know about Dannii's Great Walk to Beijing, it's all about the HITS! He didn't even give "Club Disco" a plug! I doubt Dannii herself even knows its getting a release.

Ricki-Lee to launch in the UK

Australian pop singer Ricki-Lee is going international! A thumping dance remix of her Top 2 ARIA hit "Can't Touch It", retitled "U Wanna Little Of This", will be her first single in the UK through Ministry Of Sound. The music video (above) remains the same as the original, although it has been sped up to fit the remix. British "Neighbours" fans will recognise the barman at the start of the video, Dan O'Connor, who plays Ned Parker. He and Ricki-Lee have both remained good friends since beginning as contestants in the 2004 season of Australian Idol.

"U Wanna Little Of This" is out digitally on May 19th and physically on May 26th. Go Ricki!!!

Kelly performed "Ave Maria" for Pope Benedict XVI, before an estimated crowd of 30,000 people, at St. Joseph’s Seminary, April 19.

She is currently working on the follow up to last year's controversial "My December" which sold 2 million copies worldwide. The new record, which will include collaborations with OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, is due later this year. In September, she resumes her sell-out US tour with country icon Reba McEntire.

Commentary: Again, not much movement happening on this week's Singles Chart. The Veronicas score the highest debut of the week with "This Love" at #14. Delta only drops a couple of spots to #28 (I was worried it would be alot worse), while Brian goes up two spots to #18 (lets hope the album gets a Top 20 debut next week). Leona's #32 debut with "Better In Time" is based on downloads only. The CD single is out this week so next week's chart will represent a combination of both digital and physical sales, which is sure to increase its position on the chart quite rapidly. The same case for Madonna and Justin who remain at #3 in their second week, based solely on downloads. When combined with physical sales next week, I have no doubt it will be #1 (becoming Madge's 12th Australian #1).

And I have to say I'm feeling a little more optimistic about this record! A couple of cuts sounds a bit naff (most notably the opening track "Candy Shop"), while others sound very promising ("Miles Away" and "Devil Won't Recognise You" in particular). Only a week to go!!!

All I See: Music video

It's a month too late, but we finally get a music video for Kylie's US single "All I See". Sure, it's cheap as hell, but I actually don't mind it - it's simple and sexy. Kylie looks great. I have a feeling that the real purpose for the video is that "All I See" might very well be the next single from "X" in the rest of the world, and cause she'll be on tour, she's filmed the video now. I guess we'll have to wait and see if my theory is proven correct. Meanwhile, "All I See" has charted on some US charts: #49 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and #79 on Top 40 Radio.

Vintage Dannii 2: "This Is The Way"

Our second helping of Vintage Dannii is the brilliant "This Is The Way" from her second album "Get Into You". The single was released in September 1994 and flopped, peaking at #27 in the UK and #45 in Australia, which is a shame cause it's such a great dance tune. The video is also one of her best and is the second to feature her husband at the time, Julian McMahon (of "Charmed" and "Nip/Tuck" fame). Julian also featured in the video for her previous single "This Is It".

Due to its flopping, neither the track or video feature on Dannii's 2006 CD/DVD Greatest Hits compilation "The Hits and Beyond". The video however can be found on her 2007 "Video Collection" DVD which has so far only been released in the UK, with no word of an Australian release (much to my frustration!).

And a performance of the track - the hair! THE HAIR!!! See Dannii drag a bunch of random kids onto the stage to dance with her. So craptacular!

Album reviews: Brian, Mariah and Ashlee

These are not my reviews so the opinions expressed in them are not of my own, but of the reviewer. They are found in this week's Herald Sun music liftout HiT, a publication I have been reading for years.

Brian McFadden: "Set In Stone" (Universal)
Preconceptions: Brian McFadden's swimming in them. Depending who you ask, he's the outspoken one who left soppy Irish stool-warmers Westlife; a middle-of-the-road balladeer; a trouble-making tabloid magnet or that Irish dude who charmed our Delta.

This second solo album is designed to, if not change the world's perception of Brian McFadden, at least give it a right good shakedown, and a musical update. Jump straight to track six – "Alice in Wonderland". Next to landing Delta, it's the best thing he's ever done. It also sounds like nothing else he's ever done. The throbbing beat and dancing strings that propel the verses lead you into a poptastic hands-in-the-air, smile-on-your-face chorus most dance acts would maim, if not kill, for. If Groove Armada released this, it would be No.1 in a heartbeat.

Joyous and exhilarating, it's a stark contrast to "Room to Breathe", McFadden's statement on the darkest few years of his life. Anyone who has seen his champagne-swilling, chain-smoking (and that's while she was pregnant) ex-wife Kerry Katona, would understand he has pulled off the ultimate upgrade with Ms Goodrem. He's not saying who it's about, but "Room to Breathe" should have Katona's ears burning faster than one of her cancer sticks; “You killed me once, wasn't that enough?” McFadden states on the dramatic ballad that recalls the vibe of Mr Timberlake's What Goes Around.

Elsewhere, McFadden's musical vision ranges from the U2-on-acid pop of "Twisted" to the funked-up Jones and even metallic riffs on "Zooma" to unsettle housewives. "Everything But You" and "Get Away" demonstrate the fact this man seems to just sweat out melodic, radio-ready pop rock songs, and if Song for Delta ("Like Only a Woman Can") isn't enough, the backing vocals on the powerful, Coldplay-esque "Forgive Me Twice" should sound familiar. To quote another musically gifted escapee of a boy band: listen without prejudice.

In a word: passionate

Mariah Carey - "E=MC2" (Universal)
Here eccentric street diva Carey demonstrates her comeback album "The Emancipation of Mimi" was no fluke. The hit "Touch My Body" isn't even the strongest offering here. Carey has a knack for roping in hot rappers, most memorably ODB. Here she's joined by Young Jeezy on the crunk-rock Side Effects, about leaving a destructive relationship. Carey has rarely penned such frank lyrics. Though missing her forays into neo-soul, E=MC2 is musically adventurous. She even flirts with Caribbean rhythms on "Cruise Control". It's clear Mimi isn't surrendering to Rihanna just yet.

In a word: confident

Ashlee Simpson - "Bittersweet World" (Universal)
This third album has been over-delayed and overthought. It shows. The flop lead single, Timbaland's messy Outta My Head, even derailed his winning streak. Ditching angst-pop (bar Little Miss Obsessive), now Simpson wants to be Gwen Stefani, either solo or in No Doubt mode. The best moments come with her work with Chad Hugo (Neptunes) and the underrated Kenna: Gwen-esque '80s pop like Boys and No Time for Tears, and simple piano ballad Never Dream Alone. Elsewhere it's patchy and misguided, and the cringe-worthy ode to fiance Pete Wentz – Rule Breaker – is grounds for divorce.

In a word: unconvincing

What happened to all the lesbians?

I mentioned in my chart commentary that the entire lesbian population must have bought K.d Lang's "Watershed" album last week, when it jumped an amazing 37 spots to #1 on the ARIA Charts. Well if that were the case, only a mere 4,914 lesbians live in Australia! Yes, last week's number one album sold less than 5,000 copies. An extremely worrying statistic isn't it. According to Herald Sun music editor Cameron Adams, it is the second-lowest-selling No.1 in Australia EVER! The top honour goes to the Black Eyed Peas who managed a #1 with a pitiful 4,800 copies a couple of years ago.

Interestingly, the latest "So Fresh" compilation sold last week a very healthy 23,465 copies, but as it is a compilation, it is ineligible for the ARIA Album Charts, and only the Compilation Chart. I have to say that in the age of digital downloading where people can choose any song they like, I'm surprised compilations remain so popular.

It will be interesting to see how many copies M-dolla sells of "Hard Candy" next week to debut at #1.

Delta in the US: Album release date and track list revealed

Above is the single cover to Delta's new US single "In This Life", which is available to purchase at the US iTunes music store NOW! So to all you Americans, please buy this track and support Delta's launch into the US market. Apparently "In This Life" has been given an "updated mix" but from the sample on iTunes, it sounds pretty much the same to me. Interestingly, the original "In This Life" video has been added to purchase, quite odd considering a new video, specifically for the US, has been filmed for the single.

Now for the exciting album news!

Delta's debut US album, titled "Delta" will be released on June 24, 2008 through Mercury Records.

Keep your fingers crossed that this date is the real deal and we don't get a repeat of her first US attempt in 2005 where her album kept being pushed further and further back, to the point it never got released!

The track listing, according to Amazon, will be:

Will be interesting to see what version of "Born To Try" makes the cut - will they go with the original "Innocent Eyes" version, the 2005 "US mix" or maybe a newly-recorded version all together? "I Can't Break It" is obviously a shortened title of "I Can't Break It To My Heart" (most like to avoid confusion with "You Will Only Break My Heart"). Apparently the US cover will be completely different to the standard version - by the look of the new single cover, she may be keeping the "Goodrem" to help establish her name more. Expect more updates to come up soon.

It also appears that a deluxe edition of "Delta" will be released in Japan on June 11 with a bonus track called "Together" (featuring JuJu) and a bonus DVD featuring the "In This Life" and "Believe Again" music videos, as well behind the scenes footage with JuJu (I have no idea who or what that is! Sorry!)

This woman never ceases to amaze me. If God were female, his name would be Dannii Minogue. Disco Dannii is taking part in the Great Walk To Beijing, a fundraiser organised by Olivia Newton John in support of advancements in cancer technology and treatment. Basically, a group of celebrities are undertaking a 21 day trek which covers 228 kilometres - a million steps symbolises the journey cancer patients take in their fight against cancer. The public is able to sponsor their favourite celebrity by donating money to the foundation. So far Dannii has gained 124 sponsors - $UCCE$$!

Rogue Traders: What You're On

The Rogue Traders release the 3rd single from their brilliant "Better In The Dark" album titled "What You're On", this coming weekend.

"What You're On" marks a significant departure from the quirky electro-rock stompers that the group are best known for. It is a mature, synth-filled dance track with smooth, uptempo beats pumping against Nat's sincere vocals. The beautifully-shot black and white video features Nat working at a New York burlesque club, where she is being kept under the tight control of her boss. She attempts to escape - is she successful? Watch for yourself:

While the album hasn't been as successful as the 4x platinum "Here Come The Drums", it has managed to maintain a solid Top 50 presence since its release in October last year, with a Platinum certification and #4 peak. Singles "Don't You Wanna Feel" and "I Never Liked You" have both been Top 10 hits and radio favourites. The group begins touring in support of the album later this month.

Holly Valance on her short-lived music career

Perfect Blend: After leaving Neighbours you went into music for a few years but after initial success, the second album’s sales were disappointing. Why do you think that was? Would you one day like to return to music?

Holly: I think that's how the music industry works. The second album independently did well, but compared to the 1st album not as well, so it depends how ya look at it. It's a very hard industry and I needed a break. I'd lost some passion and without that you're screwed, a 3rd album ain't gonna make itself. So I got out, I don't miss it and I don't want to make another record in the near future but I wouldn't rule it out altogether.

Poor Holly, someone at her old record label clearly hid the chart stats from her. Holly's second album "State of Mind" (2003) which she states "did well", reached a disastrous #57 in Australia and #60 in the UK. Great electro-pop record though. Grab it if you find it at the bottom of a bargain bin.

Jesse's bleeding love

A one and a half minute clip of Jesse's version of Leona Lewis' monstrous hit "Bleeding Love" (which he co-wrote with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder) has leaked onto the net! While it dosen't live up to Leona's masterpiece (and no other version ever will), Jesse's version sounds pretty damn awesome. The production reminds me of Timbaland's remixed version of OneRepublic's "Apologize".

Not much going on in this weeks chart, although we do have an exciting month ahead with many new releases surfacing. Madonna and Justin debut at #3. This is based on digital sales only as the CD single isn't out until April 21st. She's #1 on the digital chart so the single is sure to hit #1 when digital and physical sales are combined. Great news for Vanessa Amorosi whose "Perfect" also debuts on digital sales alone at #23, proving the track is becoming extremely popular. Delta's camp must be alarmed, in its second week, "You Will Only Break My Heart" falls 12 places from #14 to #26 - OUCH! This is officially Delta's least successful single since her debut flop "I Don't Care" back in November 2001. It seems every time Delta releases a fun poppy track, they don't go down so well with the general public (another example being 2005's "A Little Too Late" which became her first non-Top 10, peaking at #13). Her album "Delta" has fallen out of Top 50 again this week. Good news for Brian though, "Like Only A Woman Can" re-gains one spot, moving back into the Top 20. Speaking of dissapointing performances, Mariah's "Touch My Body" has been a huge under-performer considering it's the first single from a new album, sitting at #21 after only 3 weeks (and a low peak of #17). Lastly, it seems the entire lesbian population rushed out to buy K.d. Lang's new record "Watershed", which jumped a crazy 37 spots to #1!

Catch Damien's wind

I admit, he's not my cup of tea, but these "Idols" need all the support they can get. As I wrote a couple of days ago, Damien Leith (or Tic Tac teeth as one of my friends likes to call him) is releasing a generous 18-track covers album called "Catch The Wind" which showcases "the great songwriters of the 60s and 70s". According to Damien,

[the songs] have always been a major influence on my own original material. In many ways the songs of that generation are as relevant today as they were back then. I've chosen songs that either mean a great deal to me on a personal level or those that I'd just love people to hear."

Leithy has shapped up to be the second most successful Idol winner (behind first series winner, Guy Sebastian). His "Winner's Journey" cd/dvd was an enormous success during late 06/early 07, spending 5 weeks at #1 with an accreditation of 4x platinum. His "Idol" winner's single "Night Of My Life" was also a big hit, spending 5 weeks at #1 with Platinum sales and also became a Top 10 hit in his home-country Ireland. In 2007, he formally began his solo career with the ballad "22 Steps", a dreadfully dull choice which generated little interest, peaking at #11. This however did not discourage sales for his debut studio album "Where We Land" which became his second #1 album and accredited Platinum status. Oddly, no further singles were released from the album (planned second single "All I Want Is You" remained a promo-single only). Since then, he's released a novel and hosted the medical reality show "Saving Kids".

Happy Birthday Jesse!

I'm a couple of days off, but he'll forgive me. Jesse McCartney turned 21 on April 9. Happy Birthday Jesse! You'll soon learn that Jesse is a huge guilty pleasure of mine, not just cause I think he's a total cutie, but cause for someone so young, he seems to have a real passion for his music and a clear vision of his career. Let's hope all goes well for his new album "Departure", out May 20.

All I see is....failure. Kylie's US attempt officially dead

I think we all knew "X" wasn’t going to do wonders for Kylie’s career in the US, but after a week of intense TV whoring on top-rating shows like "Dancing With The Stars" (where she performed both “All I See” and “Can’t Get Your Out Of My Head” before 20 million viewers), "Ellen", "Today" and "The Late Show", you assume enough viewers will be impressed for a Top 40 debut to occur. Well maybe a Top 75 debut? No? Well ad least a Top 100 debut for sure!? Unfortunately no. It appears last week, only 5,500 Americans were interested enough in Kylie to purchase "X", helping it debut at an embarrassingly low #139. When you compare that to Kylie's US success 5 years ago with "Fever", which reached #3 and platinum status, the decay in Kylie's US popularity is astonishing. Hell, even Kylie's "flop" album, the under-appreciated "Body Language", managed a #42 peak in February 2004.

So what went wrong? Firstly, single choice. "All I See" never was and never will be single-material (unless given great remix treatment). Don't get me wrong, I love the track but it's forgettable and unimpressionable (two words that should never describe a first single from an album). This is proven due to the fact it's had ZERO impact on US radio – ironic considering it was quite obviously designed for US radio (not to mention the cut-and-paste rap provided by Mims). And this is where Kylie's people get it so wrong. The reason "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and "Love At First Sight" were so successful on radio was because they were distinctively KYLIE - not Kylie trying to be Beyonce or Janet Jackson. They sounded like nothing else on US radio, hence they stood out. Why would Americans download faux r'n'b songs from skinny little white girls, when their own market produces the likes of Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Mary J?

Secondly, if you're going to release a weak first single, ad least give it a bloody video. How does Kylie expect to get coverage on music channels when she has no music video to promote her single? IMO, "In My Arms" should have launched "X" in the US. It's classic Kylie without the over-the-topness of a song like "Wow" for example, and the video is cool and stylelised (much like the Fever era was) without being overly camp. Ad least “In My Arms” would have found success in the US clubs.

Thirdly, one week of interviews (a Kylie US tradition) is just not enough! Why isn't she performing small shows around the states? Why isn't she doing club gigs? How else does she expect to connect with a fanbase when she's not out there performing? Did she actually do any radio interviews? I'm not sure myself. Promotion in the US is always so lazy when it comes to Kylie, you wonder why she bothers in the first place.

Personally, I don't think Kylie has ever cared for US success. Had it not been for the surprise success of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", I don't think she would have even bothered trying to crack the market. But after this very harsh blow, I think it's fair to say that any hope of future US attempts are now dead and buried. I'm sure Kylie is feeling really embarrassed by these results, and will want to move on from the US, without having to suffer further humiliation. Like Robbie did, it's time for Kylie to admit defeat and concentrate on the markets that embrace her.

Tina Arena, the two-faced hyprocrite!

Tina Arena has always come off as a bit of a snob so it was no surprise when she made headlines last year, criticising reality music shows (like X Factor and Idol) for "exploiting" and "prostituting" young performers. And to be honest, I agreed with her. Of course, the fact Tina started her own career, as a performer on "Young Talent Time" must have flown right past her. For those who don't know, "Young Talent Time" was basically Idol of the 1980s. It was also where Dannii first found $UCCE$$.

So you can imagine my absolute amazement to hear that Ms. Arena, along with Darren Hayes, has signed up as a judge for the UK-leg of this year's series of Australian Idol! (which is apparently going global...don't worry, I'm just as confused as you might be) Yes, the same woman who bagged reality TV a year ago is now part of the Idol team! The power of money is an amazing thing. It appears the moment $$$ is thrown in the faces of some, their morals and beliefs are thrown out the door. And what does Tina have to say about her new position? "I am employed for one reason - my brain - and if I see potential or I don't...If we can help some of these people, that's what it it's all about". Oh how nice of you Tina! She continues, "It's about stripping off the layers for me. It's not the seduction thing, which disturbs me. The thinking you're going to be a star and have a concrete career after being part of Idol". So in other words, it’s about exploiting the shattered dreams of the deluded.

This week 10 years ago: Australia's #1 single

Each week, I'll post about the #1 single on the ARIA charts, this time 10 years ago - a great way to reminisce on old classics, and see what that artist (or group) is up to now. Exciting times ahead me thinks! Pity Dannii will never pop up (shame on you Australia, SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!)

10 years ago this week, the #1 single on the Australian ARIA charts was "Never Ever" by British girl-group All Saints. This pop classic remains the group's biggest worldwide hit, becoming a #1 smash in the UK and a Top 5 hit in many countries. It was their only successful single in the US where it reached #4. In Australia, it spent an amazing 7 weeks at top spot and was certified double platinum. It remains their only #1 here, although they did score two further Top 5's with "Under A Bridge/Lady Marmalade" (#5) and "Pure Shores" (#4).

When All Saints first launched, you could say they provided an alternative to the Spice Girls, sporting a more sophisticated, street-wise look/sound compared to the over-the-top, youthful girliness of the Spice Girls. Naturally, comparisons between the two groups were inevitable. They enjoyed great success with their first two multi-platinum albums "All Saints" (1997) and "Saints and Sinners" (2000), but due to tensions and infighting within the group, disbanded in early 2001. Later that year, their record label released a cash-in Best Of titled "The Hits". In 2006, the group reformed, signing to Parlophone Records. Despite a #3 UK hit with their comeback single "Rock Steady" (which reached a dreadful #98 in Australia), the album "Studio 1" flopped terribly, entering the charts at #40 and falling to #74 in its second week. Needless to say, the group was dropped from Parlophone. They are now signed to dance label All Around The World (therefore taking up Dannii's already limited budget!) and working on a fourth studio album to be released later this year.

More cash-in cover albums from c-grade Aussies

It's the new philosophy for Australian record labels in the 21st century - when in doubt, release a covers album. In the past 5 years, Australian artists have been churning out more and more cover albums! Young Divas, Human Nature, Guy Sebastian, Marcia Hines, Tina Arena, Kate Ceberano, Natalie Gauci are all GUILTY of this crime.

The song selections for Kate Ceberano's newie "So Much Beauty" are particularly eye-brow raising, although maybe not as much as that breast-tastic picture I've posted of her *drools*. Included are The Kate's takes on...yes wait for it... "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol (I think I just threw up a little), "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall, "Babylon" by David Gray, "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5, "Live To Tell" by Madonna (oh no, she di'nt!) and "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretender (cause apparently Marcia Hines' version wasn't bad enough). In a bid to restore some shred of credibilty, she's included 3 original numbers including "Never Say Never To A Friend", a duet with "It Take Two' partner, Melbourne footballer Russel Robertson. Aren't the over 40 bogans in for a treat! Naturally, the album is released on April 26, just in time to cash-in on the "It Takes Two" finale and Mother's Day sales.

Out the same day is the new album from 2006 Idol "winner" (do they really win much these days?) Damien Leith. Yep, after his debut album performed below expectations last year - although to be fair, it didn't perform terribly bad either considering it only produced one single "22 Sleeps...I mean "22 Steps" - Sony BMG are hoping to make up the difference with an album of Don McLean (I smell another "American Pie" *cries*), Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Neil Young covers. The album is called "Catch The Wind".

Now we sit and wait in anticipation for Anthony Camp-allea's new album of showtune covers. I'd die for his rendition of "Big Spender"!

Vintage Dannii 1: "Baby Love"

Each week, i'll post an old music video from Dannii Minogue, basically any one of the singles from her first two albums which were released between 1990 and 1994. What distinguishes "Vintage Dannii" from the icon Dannii is today: she still has a natural face, she dosen't have breasts, she's (how do I put this nicely) still got abit of "baby fat", and of course those very unfortunate make-up and wardrobe choices. But Vintage Dannii will live on forever in our trashtastic hearts.

Today, we celebrate the classic "Baby Love", taken from her first album "Love and Kisses". Released in October 1991, the single peaked at #26 in Australia, #14 in the UK and #18 in Ireland. Of all the singles from her first album, this one has dated the least and still sounds fresh and hip (in a retro kind of way) today. Even her style in the video is not as trashy as previous videos (I'll save the worst for last haha). Enjoy your weekly dish of Vintage Dannii...

As Dannii's first two albums are no longer in print, the only place to find "Baby Love" is on her greatest hits compilation "The Hits & Beyond" (2006).

M-dolla has 4 minutes to impress the US

Madonna is back with a new face, a new sound (Nelly Furtado left a message, she wants it back) and another adopted son, Justin Timberlake. Her new single "4 Minutes" (which should really be credited as Justin Timberlake feat. Madonna) sees M-dolla (I'm not joking, that's her official nickname for this album) suck the blood out of the hippest duo in the business - Timbaland and Justin - in an attempt to be liked by the US again. And it REEKS of desperation.

Once upon a time, Madonna created the trends (I said trends, not the actual genres!). Think back to "Music" in 2000, which bought about a wave of electro-pop from every pop chick under the sun. Well this time, she is jumping ON the bandwagon and she's around 2 years too late. "4 Minutes" isn't a bad track, it's fun, it will go off in the clubs, and the US will love it, but it's neither boundary-pushing nor innovative, which is what Madonna is most known for. Full credit to Justin whose effortless vocal performance saves the track. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Madonna, who offers one of the worst vocal performances of her career. The fact Justin sings more of the song than Madonna does is also a tad worrying.

The music video is great visually - but doesn’t go anywhere. At the start of it, you think there's some sort of storyline emerging, but it disappears without a trace, and all we are left with is Justin and Madonna busting some dance moves? I thought they were meant to save the world?

Delta's single dilemma

So Delta's revealed that she's stuck in deciding which should be the fourth single from her latest album "Delta". The two candidates are the funky, r'n'b-inspired "Possessionless" and the uplifting mid-tempo ballad "I Can't Break It To My Heart". I'd personally go with "I Can't Break It To My Heart" as it's very commercial and exactly what people love from Delta - a nice big ballad. Only problem I see with it is the fact that her last single was called "You Will Only Break My Heart" and this could cause some confusion amongst the general public as the titles are so similar. You be the judge...

Dannii Minogue's sister, Kylie Minogue, is going into damage control by rush-releasing the 3rd single from her stalling album "X", the brilliant pop-dance track "In My Arms". "In My Arms" was the second single throughout Europe, while the UK and Australia got "Wow" (a very bad move). The CD single is out in Australia on April 28 and May 5th in the UK. Track listings are:

But to be out of Top 50 would mean she is selling merely a few 100 copies a week (yes, CD sales are THAT bad!). If things don't improve for "X", it will be her worst selling studio album in Australia since 1991's "Let's Get To It"! On a worldwide scale, "X" has sold just below 850,000 copies. Keen an eye out for news on the US debut of "X". Will her one week of TV whoring pay-off?

McFadden's new album is set in stone

Mr. Delta, aka Brian McFadden, releases his second solo album "Set In Stone" in Australia on April 19, with a release in the UK and Europe to follow. The first single, an updated version of his 2007 Irish #1 "Like Only A Woman Can", has so far peaked at #15 on the ARIA Charts, becoming his highest charting solo release in Australia (excluding his duet with Delta, "Almost Here", which reached #1). The track is his soppy yet touching dedication to fiance Delta Goodrem.

"Set In Stone" is the follow-up to Brian's 2004 debut solo record "Irish Son", which sold 800,000 copies worldwide. The record produced the UK and Irish #1 hit "Real To Me", "Irish Son", "Almost Here" and "Demons". In 2006, he released a duet with LeAnn Rimes called "Everybody's Somebody", from her album "Whatever We Wanna", but it proved to be a huge flop reaching #48 in the UK and #27 in Ireland. Brian has since left Sony BMG and signed with Universal. Best of luck to the Irish fella!

Vanessa Amorosi is perfect

Vanessa Amorosi has arrived! After her non-eventful comeback late last year with the rather naff "Kiss Your Mama!" (ARIA #15) comes the best single of her career, "Perfect". If radio play is any indicator so far, this could very well be Vanessa's "Shine" of 2008. "Perfect" is a stunning slow burning rock-ballad which reminds me a tad of Kelly Clarkson's "Sober". But wait till you see the gorgeous music video, it will change your perception of the Vanessa Amorosi you once knew. In it, we see a vamped-up Vanessa slowly strip off all her fake and material accessories. It looks quite expensive - good to see proper money being invested into such a great song. And boy has she grown into a bit of stunner! Good to see her discover some style and a make-up box.

I've lost count of how many times the new album "Somewhere In The Real World" has been delayed, but it looks like the FINAL release date will be May 26.

A bit of background information about Vanessa:
Vanessa Amorossi was Australia's IT girl in the early 00s. Her debut album "The Power", released when she was just 17 years old, was a #1 hit in Australia, with sales of 4x platinum. In Germany, the album went Top 10 and Gold. The singles where all big hits on radio and the charts alike: "Have A Look", "The Power", the Top 5 "Shine" and her most memorable world-wide hit, the dance anthem "Absolutely Everybody" (a Top 5 all over Europe and #7 in the UK). Proof of her popularity were her performances at the opening and closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Her following studio album, 2001's "Turn To Me" flopped due to lack of promotion and any singles being released from it, stalling at #21 in Australia. After that her career in Australia kind of died. She continued on in Germany with the release of her third studio album "Change" which reached #64 over there. Although the single from "Change", "Spin (Everybody's Doing It)", was released in Australia (#34), the album was never released here. 2006 saw the unexpected release of a "Best Of" CD/DVD collection. Let's hope "Perfect" brings back one of Australia's best voices back into the spotlight.

Nathan has confirmed...

And the award for most pointless release goes to...

So the webmaster of Dannii Minogue's official site, the infamous Nathan, has revealed that "Club Disco" is getting a CD release in Australia, no doubt due to the return of the shockingly bad TV variety show "Australia's Got Talent" (on which Dannii is a judge - I don't know how and why she does it, me thinks $$$). It was a huge rater last season, proving Australia will watch anything fed to them, although it did nothing for Dannii's record sales - her last single (no, not the one that was ineligable to chart cause some dumbass at Central Station decided to make a 13 track single that featured 2 of the SAME remix) failed to crack the ARIA Top 30.

Seriously, I don't know why they are bothering with this release. It will sell 20 copies, and even those 20 people (including myself) will already have downloaded it MONTHS ago when it was released digitally in the UK. Half of Disc 1 is already on the 2006 compilation "The Hits & Beyond" while all the remixes on the bonus disc have been previously released on their respective singles. I'm getting rather tired of Dannii (correction, Dannii's people) constantly recycling the same old material over and over again. Lord knows the booklet better be bloody good! It's the only thing about this release that remains a mystery.

On a positive note, "Club Disco" works really well as a sophisticated club album. In fact, it is the 5th studio album Dannii should have released all along! (minus a couple of duds). In terms of the new tracks, "I'm Sorry" is the hit Dannii never had (why on earth crap like "He's The Greatest Dancer" and "Touch Me Like That" are getting released instead is beyond me), and "I Will Come To You" is a total gem. "Feel Like I Do" (originally a b-side to "So Under Pressure") is an under-rated masterpiece.

Gold for Ricki-Lee!

It seems that going independent is starting to pay off for one of Australian Idol's most worthy assets Ricki-Lee. While the future of girl-group Young Divas, which Ricki was once a member of, has been thrown into uncertainty after the dismal performance of its second album (containing more tiresome 80s covers that somehow manage to sound just as dated as the originals), Ricki-Lee is scoring a string of Top 10 hits from her second album "Brand New Day".

Although the album only managed to spend 2 weeks in the Top 50 (peaking at #37), according to Ricki-Lee on her official forum, the album has shipped Gold (35,000 copies). The mind boggles how an album can achieve those kind of sales with a chart run that errr...brief. But as a wise man once said, miracles do happen. No doubt, the long-lasting success of her Top 2 hit "Can't Touch It", a special edition of the album which came with a copy of her debut and her stint on the variety show "It Takes Two", have attributed to the Gold shippings of "Brand New Day".

The record trully deserved a higher chart placing - its fresh, vibrant and much better than her debut. Most importantly, it utilises Ricki's monster of a voice as evident in the latest single "Cant Sing A Different Song". She has also mentioned the possibilty of releasing the track "I Appreciate You" (dedicated to her mother) in time for Mother's Day.

It'll all get better in time for Leona

Seriously though, can it get any better for Leona Lewis than it already has? One of the biggest singles of the past decade with "Bleeding Love" - which has reached #1 in over 27 countries (including the US!) - and an album that has sold over 2.5 million in only 5 months, Leona is on a role. Not since Kelly Clarkson has a reality TV winner captured the heart of the globe the way Leona has. New single "Better In Time" is sure to continue her winning streak.

The single is out in Australia on the 21st (the same week as Jesse, Madonna and Rogue Traders - what a week for new releases!) Track listing:

Leona will be visiting Australia in late April to promote the single and perform on the season finale of "So You Think You Can Dance". Lets pray the US version of "Spirit" (which includes 4 new tracks) is released as a limited edition in Australia to boost sales :D

Jesse McCartney's reinvention

Think back 5 years, when a cute 16-year old blondie named Jesse McCartney was the crush of every teenage girl (and gay boy). With hits such as "Beautiful Soul" and "She's No You", his fantastic debut record, also titled "Beautiful Soul", went Platinum in both the US and Australia. He toured around the world and in 2006, returned with a harder rock-pop sound on his second album "Right Where You Want Me". Although the record displayed greater artistic maturity and progression, it turned out to be somewhat of a "somophore slump", failing to even reach Gold in the US. Since then, it's all been about "High School Musical" hearthrob Zac Efron, leaving many wondering, what ever happened to Jesse?

Well he'll be 21 later this month, so it's time to prove that he's a real man. Out is the boyish hair and cool casual clothes - in is the short brown do and highly stylish outfits. The sound has changed to - dramatically. New single "Leavin" has certainly created a buzz within the online community - most of which has been positive - and has become a favourite amongst remixers. The music video has caused a bit of stir, with a topless Jesse getting close and personal with a love interest on a bed. The single has so far reached #32 on US Top 40 Mainstream radio. "Leavin'" has been digitally released in Australia and will be released physically on April 21, 2008 (no word on a track listing).

The album, approapriately titled "Departure", is said to sport an 80s urban-electro vibe. I don't think I'm far off in saying that this record will be to Jesse what "Dignity" was to label-mate Hilary Duff. The album arrives in the US on May 20. I assume, it will be out at a similar time for the rest of the world.

New Alanis Morissette album cover revealed

The gorgeous Alanis Morissette is back with her 7th studio album (and her 5th since the 30+ million-seller "Jagged Little Pill") titled "Flavors of Entanglement", and here is the cover art! It is planned for an international release on June 2nd. Alanis has co-produced the entire record with Guy Sigsworth and the material has been described as "techno-sounding but organic". The first single "Underneath" will be released digitally on April 15.

Spice Girls let fans down again

Is it just me, or are the Spice Girls deliberately trying to piss off their fans? First they cheated their followers in Asia, South America, Africa and Australia, by going back on their word that they would tour those areas. Dissapointed fans, excited at the prospect of seeing their childhood heroes together for the very last time, could be forgiven for assuming that they would ad least get to experience it through DVD. Well guess what? Apparently there isn't going to be a fucking DVD!

Ah well, I guess the girls are content with continuing their flop solo careers and whoring their children for tabloid magazines. As you can tell, this has pissed me off, but I will live. So much for "Girl Power!" though :(

"You Will Only Break My Heart" Live @ Sunrise

On Thursday 3rd April, Delta Goodrem performed an acoustic version of her latest Australian single "You Will Only Break My Heart", on Channle 7 morning show "Sunrise". The single debuted on the Australian ARIA Single Chart at #14 (#29 on downloads, #3 on physical sales), becoming her lowest charting release since her flop debut single "I Don't Care" (#64) in November 2001. The album from which it is taken, "Delta", did however re-enter the Top 50 at #45. The album is currently 3x platinum with sales of over 200,000 copies.

Delta is off this month to launch her assault on the US market (hopefully with more success this time round). She recently switched labels, signing with Mercury Records, and has filmed a new video for the first single "In This Life" (let's hope it's not as cheap as the original video!). According to Delta on her official forum, her biggest worldwide hit "Born To Try" (from her debut album "Innocent Eyes") will be included on the tracklist for the US version of "Delta". I guess all we can do is wish her the very best of luck! She trully deserves it.

Back to Australian Delta-related news, it is expected that she will begin her second national tour (following the 2005 Visualise Tour) in November this year. Delta also confirmed that her recent Sydney concerts (which took place on March 27 and 28) will be getting a release on DVD, so more details on that are sure to surface.
